Do you have a Back-Up system in your computer?

In my small business, computer is a must-have-item and it would be same with most of small business in the world. Unfortunately computer crashes and that happens. That happened to me for a couple of times. We always have to aware of the reality after a computer crash and these were a part of nightmare I had to endure, NO emails – in & out, No internet connection – of course cannot publish my blog, No schedules to be confirmed, No contacts other than tel #s in my cell phones, No business data access… In another word, I was 99% malfunctioning.

1. Back-up system – memory sticks, external hard drive, CD…

2. Good IT service

So in order to survive the computer disaster, I highly recommend to have the above two things. I use an external hard drive to back up the all my business data, by t he way, I use “Seagate Free Agent Go” which has 250GB capacity. I love it! I set it up as backing up the information whatever I want to do in my computer automatically. (http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/products/external/)

freeagent familyAnd IT service could be an individual computer technician or a technical customer service at the company where your computer is from. The important thing is you have to know where you contact when your computer is sick.

My small business can never ever survive without “computer.” I adore my computer as my business partner and it’s my responsibility to take care of my biz partner as much as I can.

4 wheels on my business; Design-Manufacture-Market-Sell

PR post cards Sp/Su '11

No matter what type of business they are, 99% of small business owners are spending a majority of their times, moneys and labors on “marketing”, I beleive. My business has 4 core business structures like 4 wheels of a car- Designing dog clothing, Manufacturing them, MARKETING them & Selling them. If “marketing” is successful, selling is just flowing afterwards. Of course, my designs have to be good and sellable. Otherwise, selling  just falls down, no matter how successful “marketing” is. In the meantime, let’s say; I created such an attractive dog rain coat (well, I always believe in my creativity, otherwise I wouldn’t bring my designs to the market,) but if I didn’t get a great workmanship from a factory, its design would be dead and I could never market the dog rain coat as a merchant.

In my case, “marketing” is the most challenging one. I was trained to be a designer in New York, and Italy. I have been more than ten years in the fashion industry so I can easily get how a manufacturing procedure goes. So far I tried or have been trying lots of things as my marketing strategies; the network marketing such as facebook, twitter, SEO, put an ad. in magazine, hired an e-marketing agency, distributed PR postcards, sponsored a rock band concert, send a monthly e-newsletter “Puppy News” even this blog could be one of them… Yes, trying a LOT!

Marketing requries lots of patience, time and $. Unfortunately it never happens over night. Well, I should not say “never”, because who knows what happens tomorrow when I wake up…!

Why do you do what you do?

Alexander Mcqueen, spring 2010

I saw the Alexander McQueen’s exhibition, “SAVAGE BEAUTY” at Metropolitan Museum of Art. (http://blog.metmuseum.org/alexandermcqueen/ )It was breathtaking. As a designer who learned fashion design and still is related to it, I can’t stop paying respect to his creativity. That is far beyond a fashion designer’s territory and emerges out of his artistic nature. In the meanwhile if I simply looked at every single piece of his design as a human being, I realized myself deeply sad.. He can never design on the earth again.

On the way home, “why he chose to put a period to his life?” I kept thinking. Nobody can answer that. I truly hoped that he knew why had to do or wanted to do. Lee Alexander McQueen redesigned his whole creative world by his death one more time. Was it his final challenge in his forty years life…?

We should know why we do what we do, no matter what. That’s a basic responsibility as a human being. Otherwise we can’t be a challenger.

Do I know why I do what I do? Yes, I do – started small business, designing for a dog not a human being, small but a charming on-line dog clothing store, not a millions of subscribers of e-news letter, “Puppy News” but well engaged people and this blog that I have to squeeze my capability of English Language. I cherish all of them in my heart.

How people treat their dogs…

It was such a beautiful day. Taking advantage of the nice weather, I did a café hopping around the New York City to leave the postcard that La Maison de Puppy made for the Spring promotion.

I saw a lady with a beautiful Cavalier on the street in upper east side. The female Cavalier  was very calm and just staying by the lady and sometimes she was looking up her and trying to take some attention from her owner. “JUST BE QUIET AND STAY!!” The lady shouted at her – just out of the blue… The lady’s face literally looked like a devil; she got slanted eyes and mouth, and glared at her dog. Plus she was tugging the leash vigorously. What a poor thing…! The poor Cavalier girl was trembling with the fear yet she was still looking up her owner as if she want to express herself like “Mom, I am a good girl so don’t get mad at me.”

I am a good girl...

What kind of dog owner she is! She is just an egoist who was emotionally driven and lost her mind. I was very angry with her; she just took out her feeling on her dog who couldn’t do anything but obeyed her selfish owner.

At the moment, I was thinking about my twin sisters’ Chihuahua mix and wanted to give them a big hug so badly.

Dog fashion business under “sole Proprietorship”

Body length is 7” (1”= 2.245cm), neck width is 6 ½”… “letter size paper is big enough.” I put back a roll of pattern paper and placed a piece of copy paper on the table. The first step of drawing a paper pattern of a dog clothing is to draw a straight vertical line which is called CF (center front.) “What’s the shoulder width?” I just noticed a dog doesn’t have “shoulder width.” How many times I’ve seen dogs in my life? Just realized how a dog’s body shapes? So stupid!

How to draw a dog jacket's paper pattern?

Designing dog clothes, making a dog clothing, dog fashion, or dog apparel. What should I explain my small business? Small business? Am I owning a small business? Yes, or no. My business is not incorporated but it is operating. Then I learned that this type of business is called “sole proprietorship.” My business account at a bank is under my name and when I receive a check; its payee has to be my name, too.

To be honest with you, starting a business in the U.S. is not so difficult. I mean by technically, not financially, neither mentally.

The following is what you can find at the website of U.S. Small Business Administration (www.sba.gov)

5 Steps to Registering Your Business

Whether you are starting a new business or expanding an existing business, you will need to follow some basic steps to ensure you have all the necessary licenses, permits and registrations needed to legally operate.

For a full content, please go to http://www.sba.gov/content/5-steps-registering-your-business  This is the great sourcing if you are a small business owner or the one to be. Plus believe or not, they navigate and connect you to facebook http://www.facebook.com/SBAgov, tiwtter http://twitter.com/#!/SBAgov/following and Youtube http://www.youtube.com/sba as well. In twitter SBA of course is following IRS (why not?) the author of  “the Rich Dad Poor Dad”, that is too popular as a business starting bible, Robert Kiyosaki. And more interesting thing is; they follow the 44th President of the United States.

By the way, aren’t you curious how many small businesses are there? In 2008, there were 29.6 million businesses in the United States, according to Office of Advocacy estimates. Census data show that there were 6.0 million firms with employees in 2006 and 21.7 million without employees in 2007 (the latest available data). Small firms with fewer than 500 employees represent 99.9 percent of the 29.6 million businesses (including both employers and nonemployers.) Well, I am one of them. And you?
